Today, Google Earth. Tomorrow, Google Universe?

You may have used Google Earth to explore the planet from your armchair, but have you explored Google Sky, the Moon from Google Moon, or Mars from Google Mars?

You won’t find a Starbucks coffee shop there (yet), so why has Google invested in these extraterrestrial projects? According to Google’s Tiffany Montague, they “want to make the universe searchable”. That sounds innocent enough: only after the original Google search engine was built did Larry and Sergei find a way to monetize it. I won’t worry about Google’s designs on the universe until Google CEO Larry Page proclaims from a Googleplex balcony that Google “needs breathing room”.
