Makers and takers

Do you live-in a death spiral state? That’s the title of a provocative new Forbes article that questions the viability of states with high percentages of government-dependent residents.

Let’s say you are a software entrepreneur with 100 on your payroll. If you stay in San Francisco, your crew will support 139 takers. In Texas, they would support only 82.

As regulation and taxation drives employers from “death spiral” states, the tax burden on each remaining resident rises. The death spiral states? California, New York, Illinois, Ohio, New Mexico, and Hawaii.
