Beware of phony Windows registry cleaners

I ran into a new virus today. This one was introduced by a trojan horse, downloaded by the user in hopes of restoring his PC’s speed, that claimed to clean the Windows registry. It cleaned it, alright! It made the PC virtually useless. Then it took the user to a website that offered to sell him a program that would repair his PC; all that he need do is use his credit card to buy the $19 program. (Yikes!) No virus- or spyware- scanner detected the malicious program. I was able to patch the system back together and it runs fine now.
